El Departamento Tinogasta tiene varios razgos que lo identifican. Quizás el más importante y el que lo proyecta internacionalmente es el Paso Internacional de San Francisco, que nos comunica con la vecina República de Chile.
Por otra parte estas tierras también son reconocidas por sus viñedos y por sus exquisitos vinos regionales, por sus reparadoras aguas termales y por albergar en sus entrañas algunos de los cerros que forman la Cordillera de los Andes y que detentan las mayores alturas de América, ya que todos ellos superan los 6.000 m.s.n.m.
La ciudad de Tinogasta (279 Km. de Catamarca), emplazada junto a la margen derecha del río Abaucán, es la cabecera departamental y la localidad más importante de la región. Pero antes de arribar a esta ciudad se pasa por algunos interesantes poblados dignos de distraer nuestra atención.
